In May 2013 and June 2014, General Dynamics NASSCO entered into contracts with an affiliate of American Petroleum Tankers (APT), for the design and construction of a total of five 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.
The 610-foot-long tankers are a new “ECO” design that offers improved fuel efficiency. The ships will be designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea. DSEC’s “ECO” design achieves improved fuel efficiency through several features, including a G-series MAN ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form.
The ECO Class tankers were constructed at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, with deliveries beginning in the fourth quarter of 2015 and continuing through 2017.
