Our main efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions have focused on reducing our electricity consumption, as it represents 60 percent of our GHG emissions. Over the last six years we have implemented a number of projects and have achieved annual reductions of nine million kilowatt hours, resulting in significant cost savings.
Three key projects included:
- Upgrades to our lighting systems and controls throughout the shipyard
- More than 5,000 light fixtures utilize low energy, florescent lights, which have reduced our energy needs by 67 percent per fixture over standard lights, for a total energy savings of three million kilowatt hours annually
- Automating our compressed air systems and controls
- Converting to energy efficient welding pre-heat equipment
We have many other projects under evaluation that will build on these efforts and will support our other sustainability efforts as we move forward.
