What led you to apply for a SkillBridge internship with General Dynamics NASSCO?
Having spent most of my career in San Diego, General Dynamics NASSCO has always been a familiar landmark since it’s located right next door to Naval Base San Diego and across the bay from Naval Base CoronadoNASSCO works directly with the Navy, building the ships that I served on for a major part of my career. When an opportunity to intern through the Skillbridge program came up, this company felt like the perfect fit for me. The location, the reputation of the company, and the familiarity with the product produced all played a factor in my decision to apply.
How did the SkillBridge / General Dynamics NASSCO Internship Program help your transition from active duty to a civilian career?
As a Human Resources Officer for the Navy, transitioning into civilian Human Resources was truly an eye-opening experience. While many processes were similar, there were also distinct differences, particularly in the laws governing the civilian workforce. Learning the rules and being trained and mentored by some of the top Human Resources professionals at General Dynamics NASSCO made my transition seamless. From the HR assistant to the VP of HR, everyone provided the highest level of support as I navigated through this transition.
What would you tell others thinking about applying for the internship?
As a transitioning military member, I was anxious about my post-military life; finding employment was at the top of my concerns. General Dynamics NASSCO exceeded my expectations in every way. The people and their mission made me feel like I was at home. I wholeheartedly recommend the Skillbridge program through NASSCO to any Sailor, Airman, Marine or Solider transitioning out of the military.
