SAN DIEGO – On Saturday, June 4, shipbuilders from General Dynamics NASSCO hosted their second annual NASSCO neighborhood clean-up in Barrio Logan.
In 1944, the company moved its operations from 7th Avenue to its current location in Barrio Logan as the result of increased production due to World War II. “We have been a proud member of the Barrio Logan and greater Logan Heights community for many decades and it is very important that as stewards of this community, we do our part,” said Dennis DuBard, manager for public and government affairs for General Dynamics NASSCO.
Community partners included volunteers from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Burger King on 28th Street, BAME Community Development Corporation, Donut Bar, and servicemen and women from Naval Base San Diego.
Located along San Diego’s working waterfront, NASSCO is the only major shipyard on the West Coast conducting design, new construction, and repair for ocean-going vessels.
NASSCO is a champion of environmental excellence having received multiple awards, including: San Diego Recycler of the Year Award, USCG Award for Environmental Excellence, SDG&E Energy Champions Award for Manufacturing and more.
In 2012, NASSCO received the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA)—being only one of two companies in San Diego to ever receive a GEELA.
