Keeping You and Your Family Safe
We continue to work hard to minimize the spread of COVID-19 at NASSCO and we thank everyone for their support in keeping your fellow shipbuilders safe. Everyone must follow the established safety protocols to minimize the spread of the virus and keep the NASSCO family safe.

Unfortunately, some individuals continue to come to work with flu-like symptoms after repeated reminders to stay home when experiencing symptoms. This unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.

Please DO NOT come to work if you are sick or experiencing any flu-like symptoms. NASSCO employees should contact HR at HRCV19@nassco.com or (619) 544-8585. Non-NASSCO employees should contact their employer directly.

With the upcoming Labor Day weekend, continue to take the following steps to keep you and your family safe.

  1. Know the symptoms of COVID-19, which can include the following:
     Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and appear 2-14 days after exposure. 

    STAY HOME IF YOU ARE FEELING ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS!

  2. Avoid crowded places such as beaches, pools, parties, bars
  3. Don’t share food
  4. Wash your hands frequently
  5. Wear a mask
  6. Avoid non-essential trips
  7. Stay at least 6 feet from other people who are not from you household in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The State of California has issued new guidance which requires everyone to wear a face covering when in public and when you are close to anyone not living in your household.

Face coverings are still mandatory while at work. This includes when entering any NASSCO facility, and while on NASSCO property. We understand that the face coverings can be annoying and challenging to wear at times, however covering our face during this time is one of the easiest things we can all do to help prevent the spread of the virus.

COVID-19 Update and Safety Reminder for Employees

This is a reminder if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms (revised list of symptoms noted below) do NOT come to work and to contact HR at HRCV19@nassco.com or call (619) 544-8585.

COVID-19 Symptoms noted by the CDC:

  • Cough (not related to allergies)
  • Change in your ability to smell or taste
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Runny nose or congestion (not due to allergies)
  • Unusual muscle pain

It is important we remain steadfast in our commitments to all the protective measures in place at NASSCO facilities. We need everyone’s help to keep the NASSCO family safe. Nobody can predict how the virus will affect someone else, and it is at the very heart of our actively caring safety culture to do everything you can to prevent the spread of the virus to someone else.

NASSCO’s onsite testing program continues this week. This process is going well and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation. This safety measure helps identify individuals who may not be experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms but could be unknowingly carrying the virus.

While this testing is a proactive approach to minimize the spread of the virus at NASSCO, we continue to have individuals reporting to work while experiencing flu-like symptoms or have tested positive for COVID-19. We have also had individuals participating in carpools, which later resulted in multiple positive COVID-19 reports. This is contrary to established and repeatedly publicized safety protocols and is unacceptable.

Remember, by entering a NASSCO facility, you are agreeing to wear a face covering and you are not experiencing any flu-like symptoms. These safety initiatives are like any other safety regulation, and if you “see something, say something.” Please do your part in keeping the NASSCO family safe and notify your supervisor if you observe anyone not adhering to these safety protocols.

 We continue to receive reports of positive COVID-19 cases at NASSCO. Many of the recent reports are from individuals that were not experiencing any symptoms, but were positive for the virus. 

In order to expand the current safety measures at NASSCO, we are starting an onsite testing program this week to help identify individuals who may not be experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms but may be unknowingly positive for the virus. 

Initially, the testing program will be offered to some of our Repair groups. Detailed information and instructions will be provided by their departments.

NASSCO is taking significant steps to provide guidance and PPE to support a safe workplace. Everyone must follow the established safety protocols to minimize the spread of the virus and keep the NASSCO family safe.

Unfortunately, some individuals have come to work with flu-like symptoms and were later diagnosed with COVID-19. This is contrary to established and repeatedly publicized safety protocols. As a reminder, by entering a NASSCO facility, you agree to wear a face covering and that you are not experiencing any flu-like symptoms. This past week, NASSCO has increased the frequency of disinfecting, and added a new method to accomplish this. We have begun using foggers to disinfect many of the common areas in the shipyard, as well as some shipboard and indoor building spaces. This is being performed daily by our Maintenance Team and a contracted company that specializes in this type of work. The fogging is currently taking place on 1st and 2nd shift. Some of the common areas disinfected on a daily basis include lunch areas, restrooms, handrails/stair towers, turnstiles, gangbox areas, and handwash/bluehouse stations.

Disinfectant fogging is a good supplement to our existing processes used throughout the facility to disinfect high-touch surfaces, but please remember to continue to wash your hands regularly, wear your face coverings, clean your face coverings, and practice social distancing.

NASSCO has been informed of additional positive reports of COVID-19 this week. Contact tracing and disinfecting efforts are underway. We are continuing to work hard to minimize the spread of the virus at NASSCO and we thank you for doing your part to keep your fellow shipbuilders safe.

COVID-19 Update for Employees

We have several updates for you since our last communication. This week, we began distributing thermometer strips for personal use. We’ve made these available to all employees and encourage everyone to monitor their temperature before work and regularly.

When reporting to work, your temperature should be less than 100°F, without the use of fever-reducing medication like Tylenol or Advil. If your temperature is 100°F or above, please do not come into work and follow the proper steps for reporting.

We have noticed that some individuals are not adhering to the mandatory face covering directive. Face coverings are being used to minimize the spread of COVID-19, and thereof should be treated like all other safety equipment. The safety of your fellow shipbuilders depends on us all taking this mandate seriously.

Additionally, we have been made aware that some employees may be carpooling to work. We strongly encourage you to find other means of transportation, which allows for proper social distancing, whenever possible. If you elect to ride in a carpool, you should wear your face covering and the following control practices from the CDC should be used:

  • Limit the number of people per vehicle as much as possible. This may mean using more vehicles.
  • Maintain social distancing when possible.
  • Use hand hygiene before entering the vehicle and when arriving at the destination.
  • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces after each carpool or shuttle trip (e.g., door handles, handrails, seatbelt buckles).

NASSCO has been informed of additional positive reports of COVID-19. Contact tracing and disinfecting efforts are underway. While the State of California is attempting to slowly re-open the economy, we have to remain vigilant, and faithfully follow all safety guidelines.

Distribution of Forehead Thermometers

Forehead thermometers are being distributed today for employees who would like to check their own temperatures before coming to work. If your temperature is 100°F or above, please do not come into work.

How to use forehead thermometers:

  1. Peel off backing and apply to clean forehead
  2. Wait 15 seconds
  3. Green: Correct temperature
  4. If you do not see green, blue or tan colors will appear:
    Blue: add 1°F
    Tan: subtract 1°F

If you have a fever, or any other COVID-19 symptoms:

  1. Contact your healthcare provider
  2. NASSCO employees please report in to the COVID-19 reporting line at (619) 544-8585
  3. Subcontractors please contact your employer.

Remember to wear your face coverings while at NASSCO facilities and regularly wash them.

We have several updates for you since our last communication. This week, you may have noticed we increased the frequency of temperature taking as you enter the facility. This process is going well and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation.

We still need your help. We encourage you to always keep in regular communication with your supervisors, however it is vital that HR receives any information pertaining to a COVID-19 positive report quickly and accurately.

As a reminder, you should not come to work if:

  1. You are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
  2. You have tested positive for COVID-19
  3. In the last 14 days, a member of your household or someone close to you, tested positive for COVID-19

NASSCO has been informed of additional positive reports of COVID-19. Rigorous contact tracing and disinfecting efforts are being completed. We recognize the hard work from our Safety and HR teams in ensuring these tasks are performed quickly to help minimize the potential spread of the virus.

As anticipated, COVID testing in San Diego County is becoming more accessible and as a result we will continue to see more positive reports. It is imperative that we consistently adhere to our face covering and social distancing mandates while maintaining our commitment to all of the protective measures in place at our NASSCO facilities.

With the county moving to approve new levels of reopening more businesses in the upcoming weeks, it is important we remain steadfast in our commitments to all the protective measures in place at our NASSCO facilities. In addition, as reported earlier this week, face coverings are now mandatory in San Diego and at NASSCO. You must wear a face covering while at work.

It is also important that individuals who experience coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or those who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past two weeks—even if not experiencing any symptoms—not come to work, and report in, using the COVID-19 reporting line at (619) 544-8585.

This week we had more positive case reports and the Safety team continues to perform contact tracing and sanitizing activities wherever needed. One of the additional measures for disinfecting that is being deployed is the use of fogging. This utilizes a hydrogen peroxide solution that is safe for humans and effective against the virus. The process is performed on second shift and employees can typically re-enter the area soon after the fogging is complete.

On another front, we are pleased to report that five previously positive employees have fully recovered, returned back to NASSCO, and are doing well. We have also seen more than 30 employees, who have sought testing in the community, report back with negative results. We would like to provide you with several updates regarding COVID-19. The NASSCO team has been working very hard to keep the workplace safe while we continue our essential work. Since our last update, we have received information on additional cases of COVID-19. For all known cases, thorough cleaning and sanitizing have been completed and contact tracing is in progress.

Yesterday was the first day of mandatory face coverings. It was noticed and appreciated that everyone is taking the new instructions very seriously and we are complying with the new county order. This is another step in the right direction and we must continue that commitment.

It is good news that COVID-19 testing has become more accessible in San Diego County. As a result, we may continue to receive more notice of positive reports. The state’s three sites will offer about 800 testing appointments, Monday through Friday at the following locations:

Mandatory Face Coverings

San Diego County has issued a new order pertaining to face covering requirements. As a result, effective Wednesday May 6, 2020, all individuals must wear a face covering while on NASSCO property. We will be denying entry to anyone that is not wearing a face covering. We understand that San Diego officials will be enforcing this order in the community.

Homemade masks, bandanas, scarves and neck gaiters are acceptable face coverings since the items can be washed and reused. Please remember to regularly wash your face coverings.

We also appreciate employees continuing to keep us informed if they develop COVID-19- related symptoms and test positive while out on personal leaves of absence. We know this is a serious illness and even one-person sick is too many. Our thoughts are with all our NASSCO families that may be experiencing illness from this pandemic. NASSCO has been informed that an employee has tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID- 19). The employee last worked on April 17, 2020 in SOC 3, 2nd shift. Any persons found to be in close contact with this individual, will be contacted by HR.
 
The CDC issues guidance in determining a close contact based on duration, distance and circumstance of potential exposure. CDC states a close contact as being within approximately 6 feet (2 meters) of a person with COVID19 for a prolonged period of time. We have had an increase in COVID-19 cases but this is, in large part, due to the increase in accessibility of COVID-19 testing. Two new, appointment-only COVID-19 testing sites opened yesterday in Escondido and Chula Vista and mobile testing sites will soon be deployed around San Diego to accommodate the increased demand for testing. As more testing sites like these emerge, the amount of positive reports are inevitably going to increase. We must continue to remain vigilant, we are all in this together.
 
What Are We Doing?
Employee health and safety is the priority. We’ve implemented a series of health measures for employees to prevent and minimize the spread of the virus — from increasing the frequency and intensity of cleaning to adjusting our practices in the shipyard to ensure the recommended social distancing guidelines are met. We are meeting every day, working to identify additional ways to improve on these measures.
 
Employee Communication
We are committed to keeping our employees notified at the onset of receiving notification of a presumptive positive, through email and text notifications. As soon as a new case of COVID-19 has been reported, HR and Safety immediately begin contact tracing in order to:
  • Identify where the employee worked so that we can deep clean and sanitize the area with products that meet the EPA’s criteria for use against COVID-19
  • Contact anyone who may have been in close contact with the employee per the current CDC guidance
What Can You Do?
Wear your face coverings, wash your hands frequently, and remember the importance of social distancing and continue to practice it, even during breaks and meal periods. By following these protocols and all safety measures, we continue to minimize the potential spread of the virus.

This afternoon, NASSCO was informed that two employees have tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). One employee last worked on April 21, 2020 in the Matson engine room, and that area has already been sanitized. The second individual last worked on April 24, 2020 in SOC 6. Contact tracing investigation, cleaning and disinfecting plans are underway. All individuals found to have been in close contact with these employees will be notified.

Today, NASSCO was informed that an employee has tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). This employee last worked on April 16, 2020 in SOC 5, 2nd shift. After contact tracing and investigation was completed, there were no individuals in close contact with this employee.

Please remember the importance of social distancing (even during breaks and meal periods), wearing your face coverings and frequently washing your hands. By following these protocols and all safety measures, we are continuing to minimize the potential spread of the virus. We are thankful for the dedication our employees and guests are demonstrating in following these steps and working safely every day.

Additionally, several cities have started to mandate the use of face coverings in public. Chula Vista and National City are among the first to implement. We encourage you to wear your face coverings at all times, and be sure to clean them regularly.

Your safety is our utmost priority. We continue to make every effort possible to minimize the spread of the virus and have adopted a number of safety measures, including:

  • Enhanced screening efforts at the gates, and randomly in the yard
  • Routinely cleaning and disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces in the workplace
  • Implementing flexible worksites or work hours for certain employees (e.g., telework, staggered shifts) which has significantly decreased the number of people on-site
  • Promoting the importance for social distancing
  • Utilizing disinfection products that meet the EPA’s criteria for use against COVID-19

NASSCO has been informed that an employee has tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). The employee last worked on April 3, 2020. There has been no close contacts with this individual because they had already been out of work prior to experiencing symptoms.

In the past week, we were glad to see several employees back at work after recovering from, or being exposed to, COVID-19. We are thankful that they are doing well, and welcome them back!

We would like to make everyone aware of some new guidance from the CDC. One of the changes is related to what we have been referring to as “close contact individuals.” Those are the individuals that the safety team determines may have been in close contact with someone that has been identified as having COVID-19. Any individuals found to be in close contact will be monitored for 14 days and remain at work as long as they are asymptomatic, but must continue to use the required PPE and face coverings at all times.

New Case Protocol:

  1. HR and Safety conducts contact tracing
  2.  Once all information is verified in accordance with CDC guidelines, any individuals who were found to be in close contact with the infected individual are notified
  3. Once that process is complete, we can communicate the information to the entire workforce and our partners

NASSCO has been informed that two employees have tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). The first employee last worked on April 17, 2020, and after careful contact tracing we have determined that there were no close contacts with this individual at our facilities, as determined by CDC guidelines.

The second employee’s last day worked was also on April 17, 2020, in SOC 5. Individuals that were found to be in close contact with that employee have been notified. Per the updated CDC guidance, those close contact individuals that are asymptomatic will remain at work and be monitored daily.

All associated work areas have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. The recent cases have demonstrated the importance of wearing our face coverings at all times, and distancing ourselves whenever possible. By following these protocols, we will continue to minimize the spread of the virus. We are thankful for the dedication the employees and visitors have demonstrated during this time, and we ask that everyone continue to uphold that commitment.

In our continued pursuit of improvement as a company, we will begin using Zoom for Government (ZoomGov) for teleconferencing and chat. This will allow the company to improve collaboration and efficiency across all departments.

We will be using a specialized, licensed version, of Zoom that will provide increased security and features. The IT Department will be installing the Zoom Client and a Zoom Outlook Add-In on all NASSCO Windows devices over the weekend. Accounts will be created for each employee and you will receive an account activation email in the upcoming weeks (soon).

We ask that you do not attempt to create any Zoom accounts on your own or use the Zoom features (Zoom Desktop Client or Zoom Outlook Add-In) until you have received an activation email. We will make another company wide announcement when these emails are sent out.

Some of the highlighted features will include:

NASSCO has been informed that an employee has tested presumptively positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). This employee last worked on March 30, 2020, and therefore we have determined that there were no close contacts with this individual at our facilities as determined by CDC guidelines.

We recently began new screening measures. This includes non-invasive temperature checks using no-touch infrared thermometers, and a COVID-19 information tent located at Gate 6. Today’s new efforts seemed to be well received, and we greatly appreciate everyone’s cooperation.

Maintaining social distance and the proper use of cloth face coverings are some of the most effective ways of minimizing the spread of the virus. Remember that the guidance on distancing also applies during breaks, and while using golf carts.

Starting Monday, April 13, 2020:

  • An informational COVID-19 station will be available outside the main entrance at Gate 6. The purpose of this station will be to provide individuals with screening information concerning COVID-19 and to make temperature checks available for anyone seeking a quick assessment using a no-touch infrared thermometer.
  • Security and Safety will also conduct random, non-invasive temperature checks using no-touch infrared thermometers at various entrances and throughout the facilities.

Studies have found that individuals may not always know they have a fever, which the CDC defines as any temperature over 100.4° F [38° C].

Thank you for keeping our NASSCO team safe as we continue operations. NASSCO strongly recommends that all NASSCO employees, and any individuals entering a NASSCO facility, wear cloth face coverings at all times. Effective immediately, to the extent practical, all NASSCO employees and any individuals entering a NASSCO facility will wear cloth face coverings when they cannot maintain six feet of physical distance. This includes wearing a cloth face covering when engaging in activities in the yard or office environment such as meetings, breaks or when traveling in a golf cart. This requirement supports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California Department of Public Health and San Diego County Health Department recommendations for everyone to wear cloth face coverings in public to help minimize the spread of COVID-19.

WHAT IS A CLOTH FACE COVERING? A cloth face covering is a material that covers the nose and mouth secured to the head with ties or straps or simply wrapped around the lower face. It can be made of a variety of materials, such has cotton, silk, or linen. When possible, use multilayered fabric for extra protection. A cloth face covering may be factory-made or sewn by hand or can be improvised from household items such as scarfs or bandanas.

Masks or neck gaiters issued at the tool room meet the definition of a cloth face covering. Employees may also bring their own cloth face coverings for personal use at work.

The same rules apply to cloth face coverings as with other PPE, please do not share or use another person’s cloth face covering.

CARING FOR YOUR CLOTH FACE COVERING 1) Wash daily 2) Check for damage before each use 3) Store in clean container such as zip lock bag 4) Discard when ties or straps have stretched out or damaged, or fabric has tears or holes

PREVENTING ILLNESS The use of cloth face coverings does not eliminate the need to maintain physical distance and hand washing. Our best defense against COVID-19 is to wash our hands frequently, avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and maintain physical distance.

In accordance with CDC guidelines related to social distancing to help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the following communication addresses NASSCO’s suspension of the vanpool program for drivers and participants.

The vanpool program will be suspended effective Monday April 6, 2020. NASSCO will reinstate the program as soon as it is safe to do so.

The NASSCO payroll department will cease making automatic payroll deductions for vanpool participants next week to coincide with the suspension of service.

NASSCO issued gas cards, for vanpool drivers, will be temporarily deactivated during the vanpool program suspension. Vanpool drivers should retain the gas cards for use once vanpool service is resumed.

All participants will need to seek alternate methods of commuting to work.

NASSCO requests that vanpool drivers please relay this suspension information to your vanpool occupants in the event they do not receive this memo directly. Additionally, vanpool drivers should coordinate directly with the rental car agency providing their van in order to comply with all turn-in requirements. This may include a photograph of the odometer and parking location of the van.

Dear NASSCO Colleagues,

Today we were notified that a member of the NASSCO team has tested presumptive positive for the COVID-19 virus. I would like to take a few moments to update you on our fight against this virus and what we’re doing to address the concerns we all share.

For our presumptively positive colleague, this individual has not been at work for several days and will remain off-site, as will those employees who have been in close contact. We immediately contacted any employees that were identified as being in close contact with this individual, and they will remain home for a 14-day self-monitoring period. For this case, we followed the containment guidance from the CDC, including the necessary cleaning and sanitizing.

Like all of you, I am concerned about all NASSCO families. It is critically important that we all play our role in reducing the risk to ourselves and those around us. We must continue to practice proper hygiene, social distancing, and the recommended guidelines as we fight together against COVID-19. Most importantly, if you are sick, if someone in your family is sick, or if you or someone in your family has been exposed to the virus, Do Not Come to Work. You have a number of options for ensuring your family’s economic security and should contact HR (619-544-8585) to understand the next steps and available resources.

To all Operations employees in New Construction & Repair,

In his letter to all employees dated 3/19/20, Dave Carver explained why General Dynamics NASSCO must continue operations during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While we must continue working to meet our obligations, it is NOT business as usual.

We must ALL do our part to keep coworkers, ourselves and our families safe and minimize the potential risk of transmitting the coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout the shipyard. We can do this by following the CDC recommendations:

  • Do not come to work if you have flu like symptoms and contact the NASSCO COVID-19 hotline (619) 544 8585
  • Cover your cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face
  • If you wear gloves, wash your hands after removing them
  • Try not to use another person's phone, tools or equipment
  • Limit group gatherings or meetings to less than ten people and practice social distancing (keeping at least 6 feet away from another person) when possible. Please note this includes during breaks and meal times.

In recognition of the fact that practicing social distancing in the shipyard is easy for some but not easy for everybody, I am asking everyone in New Construction and Repair Operations to wear a respirator, a mask or other type of barrier such as a neck gaiter in order to prevent particles from our mouths becoming airborne.

Over the next few days, Operations employees will be issued with either a respirator, a mask or a neck gaiter depending on where they are working and what job they are doing.

You've read the signs "We're all in this together". Please use the mask type issued to you and take good care of it, as supplies are limited. With proper care and attention, each mask can be re-used many times. The same rules applies to respirators and masks as with other PPE, please do not share your respirator/mask with anyone else or use another person's respirator/mask.

Fellow NASSCO Employees,

We are currently experiencing an unprecedented time in our history. The challenges we face as a business, and as a society, are uncharted waters. I share your concerns, and the safety of our workforce is at the forefront of my daily decision-making.

General Dynamics NASSCO has been deemed mission essential, and it is important that we accomplish that mission. We will remain open in accordance with the President's guidance, which specifically identifies the defense industrial base as being among the critical infrastructure industries having a "special responsibility" to maintain a normal work schedule during the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a defense contractor, we cannot unilaterally refuse to perform our government contracts or discontinue operations, and because of this, we do not have the discretion to shut down.

NASSCO is regularly assessing the state of affairs related to COVID-19. We have implemented all current government-recommended measures to mitigate spread of the disease and continue to work closely with our employees, customers, suppliers, and our community to keep everyone informed.

We are continuing to add new hand-washing stations, distribute personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies throughout our facilities. Meetings have been restricted to business-essential only, and we have implemented screening of all visitors to NASSCO facilities. Regular cleaning throughout our buildings and work areas has been increased, and we are actively working to limit the gathering of people. Additionally, we are sending regular communications on the best practices for maintaining personal hygiene, a clean work environment and other relevant updates.

With the recent closing of schools and the restrictions set by the government, we are exercising flexibility in company policies and making an effort to provide shift alternatives and remote work whenever possible. If you are facing challenges, I encourage you to discuss them with your supervisor.

During a conference call today, The Honorable James Geurts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development & Acquisition took a moment to personally thank all the shipbuilders for continuing to execute our important work.   1. School closings: an employee is experiencing childcare issues in light of school closings, what should I do?
    1. NASSCO intends to be as flexible as possible. Supervisors should discuss with the employee options to move to a different shift, change reporting hours, or work remotely temporarily so long as the change will not impose significant disruption to business operations. Supervisors should coordinate with their department leadership to approve changes to work schedules or locations.However, if no alterations in shift or schedule is sufficient and an employee must be out or is requesting leave, here are the following leave options:· Use accrued sick leave hours · Use accrued vacation hours, with supervisor approval · Request an unpaid personal leave of absenceEmployees on an unpaid status may qualify for income replacement benefits through California’s Employment Development Department. General Dynamics NASSCO continues to closely monitor the events related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). We are regularly assessing the actions and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will continue to monitor the situation. Additionally, the U.S Department of State has issued multiple warnings regarding travel to impacted countries/regions and in some locations, where travel restrictions are in place, airlines have suspended flights. The following is current guidance to employees:

  1. Business Travel:
    • Effective immediately, all non-essential business travel is suspended.
    • All other business travel must be approved by executive leadership via your travel coordinator and management team.
  2. Personal Travel
    • Check the CDC webpage for the latest guidance and recommendations for each country/region to which you will travel. Specific travel information for travelers going to impacted countries/regions is available.
    • Employees are strongly encouraged not to visit countries/regions designated by the CDC as Level 2 or Level 3, and should take precautions when visiting countries/regions with confirmed cases of COVID-19.
    • Any employee returning from personal travel to a country/region designated by the CDC as a Level 2 or Level 3, or which becomes a Level 2 or Level 3 during their travel time, is asked to contact NASSCO Human Resources prior to returning to work, via the following means:  619-544-8585 or email, HRCV19@nassco.com.
  3. Preventing Illness:
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • If you do not have a tissue, cough into your elbow or sleeve instead of your hand.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  4. Employees who are experiencing Flu symptoms: 
    • In accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance on maintaining a healthy workplace and best practices, employees who have a fever, respiratory symptoms (excluding allergies), or other contagious illness should stay home. Employees should be free of flu symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing and any symptom-altering medicines, before returning to work.  Employees should notify their supervisor if they are sick.  When you are sick, you may use paid sick leave or, if you do not have paid sick leave available, unpaid leave. Alternatively, you may use vacation leave, with supervisor approval.
    • Employees who are well but who have a sick family member at home with COVID-19 should immediately notify their supervisor and refer to CDC guidance for caregivers in order to minimize their exposure and prevent transmission of the virus. General Dynamics NASSCO has been closely monitoring the events related to the novel coronavirus, which was initially detected in Wuhan, China. While the virus has mostly impacted those residing in China, countries and airlines have been taking precautions to prevent it from spreading.

Person-to-person transmission of the virus is thought to occur and spreads in the same manner as influenza and other common respiratory pathogens, including coughing, sneezing, and touching your mouth, nose or eyes after contact with a surface contaminated with the virus. The U.S. Department of State issued a warning recommending that American citizens do not travel to mainland China. In some impacted regions, there are travel restrictions in place and some airlines have suspended flights to and from China.

We are continually assessing the Center for Disease Control's actions and guidance and will continue to monitor the situation.

Preventing illness:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
